Standard rod glow plugs only have a heating coil. They get by without control coils.

Since their heating coil exhibits constant electrical resistance, such a glow plug constantly consumes a large amount of current and is assigned to a control unit which regulates the current depending on the engine temperature.

These glow plugs reach an operating temperature of 800 °C within 20-25 seconds.
