NGK supplies glow plugs and temperature sensors for new Renault engine

NGK Spark Plug is not just the leading manufacturer of spark plugs and Lambda sensors. Over the past years, the Company has also become the second-largest supplier of glow plugs to car manufacturers all over the globe. This rank is now underscored by another relevant OE-success in the area of diesel cold start technology: NGK is supplying Renault with glow plugs and temperature sensors for the new downsizing engine Energy dCi 130.

The Energy dCi 130 is a Renault-Nissan Alliance engine developed by Renault, which can be found on-board the Renault Megane’s range and Nissan’s C-platform. The 1.6-litre self-ignition engine delivers 96 kW (130 HP) at 320 Nm. It belongs to the most powerful and modest engines in its class. It consumes 20 percent less fuel than its predecessor, the 1.9 dCi.

The glow plug for this engine will be supplied by NGK. With the Y1010AS, NGK developed a new metal-rod glow plug featuring the Company’s Advanced Quick Glow System (AQGS). Its metal glow rod is 166 mm long and comes with a diameter of only 4 millimetres, enabling the plug to reach its operating temperature of 1,000 °C in just 3 seconds. Additionally, the glow plug is capable of post-glowing at an equal temperature for up to 60 seconds after engine start. In doing so, the Y1010AS makes a vital contribution both to safeguarding an optimal cold start at very low ambient temperatures as well as to reducing the emission of noxious gases over the very first metres.

Furthermore, to control the exhaust gas temperature upstream of the turbo charger, Renault uses an NTK-brand temperature sensor called RN 140J-CW. This is a third generation temperature sensor from NTK, also referred to as CTAS-T type. Its fine ceramic sensor element offers a fast sensor light-off as well as precise detection of the exhaust gas temperature within a range of 100 to 900 °C.
